Former Azerbaijani PoW speaks of torture in Shusha prison - INTERVIEW |VIDEO

Habib Kazimov took part in the first Karabakh war. Habib Kazimov, who went to the front line in 1992 lost consciousness as a result of a shell explosion during the battles. When he opened his eyes, he realized that he had been captured by Armenia.

He has been exposed to the most unbelievable tortures for a year and 18 months. 29 years have passed since those events. Justice has been restored. Armenian terrorists, who tortured Habib Kazimov in captivity, are standing trial in Baku thanks to the heroism of Azerbaijani servicemen during the 44-day war. They are accused of crimes against humanity and other crimes committed against Azerbaijanis in the previously occupied territories. Habib Kazimov, who was subjected to brutal torture, spoke about his days in captivity for the first time in his interview to AzVision.az.

He said that he fought in the battalion of national hero Alyar Aliyev:

- I have participated in the battles for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in various directions. My last battle was in Aliguluushagi village of Gubadli region. We have been fighting in the village of Aliguluushagi for a month and a half. During the battles, the shell exploded near me and I lost consciousness. They beat me and woke me up. When I came to myself, I saw that I have been captured by Armenians.I did not imagine that I could be captured. But it happened to me. We were hanging up a spare bullet on our necks with my comrades. However, it was too late. I have been kept in Khojavend for three days. The torture of three days notified me about my dark days in future. During those three days, I was repeatedly offered to "work" for them but I said to kill me. Then they took me to the Shusha prison.

Habib Kazimov said that he had not forgotten the tortures in the Shusha prison:

- Captivity is a death. However, the Shusha prison was like a hell. On the first day in Shusha, they put in the basement of a prison to hide from the Committee of the Red Cross. One of our captives, Sardar secretly informed the representative of the Red Cross that there was a prisoner in the basement. Then they took me to a cell with other prisoners in the prison. They asked me where I was from, and I said I was from Sumgayit. Less than 15 minutes later an Armenian from Baku, the head of the prison Slavik came with other people and said, "Sumgayit, get out." I knew that I was going to die. They started to beat me and I lost my conscience. When I woke up, they beat me again. They hated me just because I was from Sumgayit. Until the last day, they called me as "Sumgayit". They took out the anger of the whole Sumgayit on me.

Kazimov regarded a face-to-face meeting at the trial as a triumph of divine justice.

- As I entered the courtroom, I saw Ludwig, who I knew as “Lokha”. Although many years passed and he grew old, I recognized him immediately. How could I forget him? I looked into his eyes by saying “do you know me?”. I’m Habib Kazimov (aka “Sumgayit”). He lowered his head. I said that what did I tell you then? I said that you will all have to answer for your deeds. Now you are captive in front of me. I’m here now. God has brought me here to call you to account. The other criminals – “Gor”, “Zhirik”, “Slavik”, “Andranik” – have not yet been detained. I said, do you remember a “Georgian”? “Georgian”, who was an Armenian, tortured us all. He even insulted the God by looking into my eyes. A man of Russian origin, called Max, also tortured Azerbaijani captives. A few days later, our soldiers shot him in the head. We were also subjected to torture because of Max's killing.
